Federal authorities have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
